What you receive at the Editorial tier.

The Editorial Framing Brief is the Tier II deliverable of the Crossroads engagement ladder. It runs eight pages. It names what your book is, what it wants to be, what it comps to, what is keeping it from becoming itself, and what the next concrete move is. It is the editorial spine that any Architected engagement is built on.

Below is the structure of the deliverable. Once Crossroads has published its first cohort of titles, we will publish real client briefs with their authors' permission as case studies. Until then, this page describes the form.

§ 01

What this book is.

A one-paragraph statement of the book's core argument, written as if it were already the back cover. This is the editorial equivalent of locking down the thesis — what the book actually says, written without hedging, in roughly 120 words. If the writer cannot recognize their book in this paragraph, the rest of the brief is wrong.

§ 02

What this book wants to be.

The aspirational version. The book at its highest potential, named honestly. Often a half-step beyond what the writer has currently produced. This is the editor's read of the latent book inside the manuscript.

§ 03

Comparable titles.

Three to five published books the writer can plausibly stand alongside. Comp titles are not vanity references; they are positioning data. They tell the writer (and us) which readers this book is for, which reviewers might engage, which awards are reachable, which marketing language has been validated in adjacent markets.

§ 04

What is missing.

The honest list of what the manuscript currently lacks. Structural gaps, voice inconsistencies, underdeveloped sections, missing chapters, places where the argument flattens, places where the prose is doing less than the argument deserves. This section is the diagnostic core.

§ 05

What is in the way.

The often-deeper problem beneath the missing list. Not what is absent from the manuscript, but what is preventing the writer from delivering it. Sometimes craft. Sometimes time. Sometimes a writer's inability to see the book they have actually written. Named directly, with care.

§ 06

Three possible architectures.

Two to three concrete proposals for how the book could be structurally organized. Not outlines — architectures. The shape the chapters take, the order of the argument, the role of case studies, the place where the personal enters, the place where it ends. Each architecture is a real proposal the writer can react to.

§ 07

Recommended next move.

The single highest-leverage piece of work the writer should do next. Sometimes a sample chapter. Sometimes a reverse outline of the existing manuscript. Sometimes a conversation with a particular person. Sometimes a decision the writer has been avoiding. One concrete action.
